Papa Jakes Sub Shop aka “Papa Jakes” has been a Beverly Hills sandwich institution since 1992 with several satellite sandwich shops over the years as far south as Manhattan Beach, Ca and as far west as Brentwood.  Quality sourced fresh local ingredients, customer service and consistency have allowed Papa Jake Lodish to bring authentic Philly Cheesesteaks, Italian Subs and a loaded menu of B-L-D items and sides with plenty of combinations and add ons to make you feel satiated at the end of the day.

After 25 years in the sandwich game and a landlord relocation Papa Jakes 2.0 has found an amazing new home at the Original Farmers Market at Third & Fairfax adjacent to “The Grove.”

It’s a natural fit to be surrounded by other great well established Los Angeles food vendors such as Chef Jimmy Shaw’s Loteria Grill Fritzi Coop by Chef Neal Fraser and a few of our other favorites including Singapore’s Banana Leaf  and The Gumbo Pot.

We last featured Papa Jakes in 2009 at their former location in Beverly Hills on Little Santa Monica near Crustacean,  the Sharper Image and Sprinkles Cupcakes during the big Sprinkles Cupcakes / Oprah craze and frenzy that followed and so much has changed 8 years later in the world but the attitudes and consistency from his team of passionate cooks has not.

Consistency is key and that is why we can honestly say that Papa Jakes delivers the Best Philadelphia Cheesesteak in Los Angeles as well as a loaded Italian Sub that will knock your socks off.

To authenticate and validate that claim of “THE BEST PHILLY CHEESESTEAK IN LA“, we brought our own Philly expert along, musician and audio engineer and Philadelphia native Scotty Mlodzinski.  He sampled 2 versions of the regional sandwich, one with Cheez Whiz & the other with Provolone with sweet and hot peppers on the side and he evaluated the sandwiches based on Bread authenticity, quality of ribeye beef, cheese taste and serving size and overall look.

For those looking for a definition of what makes a “Philly Cheesesteak” a Philly Cheesesteak here you go: “A cheesesteak is a long, crusty roll filled with thinly sliced sautéed ribeye beef and melted cheese. Generally, the cheese of choice is Cheez Whiz, but American and provolone are common substitutions.”

A wide selection of different variations of homemade fries and chips were also served up and Scotty also grinded on the Special Italian Sub that he also gave 2 thumbs up.

Since we couldn’t go at the entire menu ourselves we enlisted some other friends to experience hoagie haven.  We got our sharpies out and mapped our adventure that included everything but the three-compartment-sink.

Since breakfast was recently added the Farmer’s Market location we had to try the ultimate breakfast sando, “The Capicola Breakfast Over Easy Egg Sandwich.

Well balanced and a nice moist egg yolk on a perfectly balanced roll that didn’t get soggy. The roll was saturated with plenty of tasty complimentary ingredients that make this a breakfast winner.  Substitutions are available and there are plenty of other basic breakfast sandwiches on the menu as well.
