I discovered this Santa Monica treasure on my first day of Culinary School in Santa Monica earlier this week. I was new to the area and was on the hunt for a healthy lunch. I did not want to go to the usual chain restaurants in the area and that is when I discovered Mrs. Winston’s Green Grocery. The unique micro grocer is known for the large salad bar and has received acclaim from Los Angeles Magazine for having “The Best Salad Bar in Los Angeles.”
Although the salad bar did look enticing, I had the craving for a sandwich so I proceeded to the sandwich bar so I could make a tasty and healthy sandwich that would be both satisfying and nutritious.
My recipe for a tasty sandwich consisted of Whole Grain bread, Chicken Breast, Provolone/Swiss Cheese, Honey/Dijon mustard, roasted red pepper, red onion and tomato.
I went back the next day and varied the sandwich with the Swiss cheese. All “bar” food is sold by the pound and my sandwich averaged around $4.50. That coupled with bottled water made for a healthy and affordable lunch.
I highly recommend this establishment to anyone who is looking for fresh and natural foods and also socially responsible.
Composting and recycle bins are provided so that there is minimal waste.
