Joseph Briscoe, LA Lifestyle Photographer

Your favorite LA Restaurant, Favorite type of Cuisine.

The answer to this question is constantly evolving, as I discover (and re-discover) restaurants around LA that trump the previous favorite….

Right now, I would have to (easily) say Bazaar at SLS hotel in Beverly Hills. LN2 Ciapirinha’s along with “tapas” style, mouthwatering… everything. As for cuisine…. I love all types of food, but Korean BBQ to me is fun, interactive, a little exotic, fulfilling and most of all… always very tasty.

Favorite Musician or Song that reminds you of LA

SUBLIME was one of the first bands that opened my eyes up to what Southern Cali was, and is about…

My love for Oreo cookies stems from my childhood, when my mother would give me Oreo’s under my pillow to get me to go to bed… Chocolate is my kryptonite.

Food and lifestyle bio. (Why you have chosen to be a part of Viva LA Foodies and what Foodie or Food means to you.

I’m a huge fan of exceptional food so participating with Viva LA Foodies to bring good food to life through images is a no brainer, pleasure and honor! I’m a native Californian (hold degrees from University of CA @ Berkeley and Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts), and grew up eating seasonal & regional foods. I am passionate about culinary arts, photography & travel; and wrote, photographed, and published my first cookbook of family recipes in June 2011 called Thanks Mom – Available for purchase here.

Food and lifestyle bio. (Why you have chosen to be a part of Viva LA Foodies and what Foodie or Food means to you!

Culinary arts and photography both create a mood and reaction that I enjoy to take part of and present to people. It is a pleasure to create where your senses are truly stimulated and as an artist it is easy to take part of Viva LA Foodies since it feeds me in all aspects I enjoy. Plus it is a great joy to work with Adam.

My favorite right now would be Lazy Dog Café.  Their dishes are pretty tasty and they have a fire pit outside where you can hang out with your dog. It’s all about great food and atmosphere and perfect for the summer.

Favorite Musician or Song that reminds you of LA.

This is such a difficult question. Here are a few of my favorite LA songs:
– California Love – Tupac
– Freefallin’ -Tom Petty
– Welcome to the Jungle – Guns N Roses (reminds me so much of LA)
– California Dreamin-Mamas and The Papas
– LA Woman — The Doors

Vanessa Stump, Los Angeles Food & Lifestyle Photographer

Food and lifestyle bio:

I was photographing Café Pierre in Manhattan Beach and Adam walked by with his dog. He saw me at work through the window and we struck up a conversation. I went on to shoot photographs for a story he was doing about the Dogtown Dogs Food Truck at the MOCA Los Angeles. We’ve become good friends.

Favorite Restaurant:

Loteria Grill at the Farmers Market. My great friend Joaquin would drag me to Loteria all the time and once I went I discovered they had amazing food and now I’m the one dragging my friends there. My
favorite dish is the pollo en pipian rojo and of course the delicious potato tacos.

Favorite Musician or Song that reminds you of LA:

One of the best things about living in LA is KCRW! They have a great variety of commercial free music and broadcast great information about happenings in LA.

I enjoy meeting new people and experiencing something new everyday. It’s nice to be my own boss work free of cubicles. I feel lucky that people make beautiful dishes for me to photograph. I love hearing
people say, “That looks yummy I want to eat that!”

Food and lifestyle bio. (Why you have chosen to be a part of Viva LA Foodies and what Foodie or Food means to you?

Why oh why do I love food so much? I find it incredibly interesting, and ever evolving, not to mention there are endless ways to enjoy it. I was lucky enough to grow up in a household where I was always provided home cooked meals, and the philosophy, ‘you have to try it, at least once..’ was tightly upheld. I watched and learned and slowly developed a strong appreciation for the way good food is created. Ever since, I just can’t stay out of the kitchen! My true passion is photography, and being able to meld that world, with my love of food seemed like a natural progression, for which I am constantly excited about.

I am still pretty fresh to Los Angeles (been here a little over two years) so to say the city is still a mystery to me is probably an understatement. Its silly how much time I spend exploring and driving f=down random streets, looking for undiscovered diners, taco stands, and obscure grocery stores… I love quirky bars, cheap tacos, and as of recently, Hawaiian food. Rutt’s on Washington is my current obsession. The most soul soothingly delicious cheap breakfast in LA. They exude what I can only imagine to be the truest Hawaiian flair, outside on the big island itself. Not too far away, right down the street is another current favorite, A Frame. The brainchild of [Kogi Trucks, Chego] Roy Choi. Its somewhat simple, somewhat eccentric, quirky and homely, but somehow modern at the same time. The food is unbelievable, and super wallet friendly for the whole experience. Just go. Order the sticky ribs, and the pickles, wash it down with an Anchorman, and call me in the morning.

Photography just seems right to me. I don’t know how else to put it. When I’m behind the lens, building compositions, my brain is going a million miles an hour, and I am overjoyed. I love it. I love creating images that demand a response. Whether that be an emotional response, a memory, a gulp, usually a sigh and a stomach growl… Delicious View OR Becky Reams

When I was a kid, my mom taught me the only way to eat chocolate ice cream was with crushed Fritos on top. I still strongly abide by this rule… Why don’t all LA ice cream shops carry Fritos? I just don’t get it.

Food and lifestyle bio. (Why you have chosen to be a part of Viva LA Foodies and what Foodie or Food means to you.)

I love everything about food, eating it, making it, smelling it and photographing it. The reason I am part of vivaLAfoodies is that I want to see so called common or everyday street food get the gourmet recognition it deserves.

Your favorite LA Restaurant, Favorite type of Cuisine.

There is no such thing as my favorite LA restaurant, the continual search for a great meal is what i enjoy and LA has a lot of those to offer, no matter what type of cuisine i’m after.

Favorite Musician or Song that reminds you of LA.

The one song that embodies LA for me is, “Grey in LA” by Loudon Wainwright III.

Food and lifestyle bio. (Why you have chosen to be a part of Viva LA Foodies and what Foodie or Food means to you.)

I suffer from a whole host of not-so-fun food allergies, including a wheat allergy, so when it comes to fine dining and experimentation, I have to get creative! While food is certainly a form of sustenance and a luxury in the world we live in today, there’s no question that I love to eat! Few things can get me off the couch faster than a mention of fine dining… with wine. Lots of wine! I suppose I fell in love with the epicurean adventure a few years ago when my best friend and I spent a long weekend in Paso Robles wine tasting and enjoying the high life. It’s never left me. So, in the spirit of generosity and with a joie de vivre, I have joined the ranks of Viva LA Foodies to help shed light and a lens on great wine and great gluten free dining.

Your favorite LA Restaurant, Favorite type of Cuisine.

I have to say it’s a toss up. I love both Mexican and Thai food equally! My favorite Thai spot in LA is a little known gem called Tuk Tuk on Pico. It’s amazing. But don’t go there. I won’t be able to get a table if word gets out!

I went to Kindergarten with Chad OchoCinco and we were besties (and I don’t know anything about football!) I recognized a photo of him two years ago online and said, “Hey, look! That’s Chad Johnson, my best friend from Kindergarten!” Clearly… not in the know!
