GrowingGreat Hosts Celebrity Farm-To-Table Event Supporting the Health and Education of Los Angeles Families
Top L.A. chefs to prepare an oceanfront, farm-to-table dinner in support of healing communities locally and beyond through nutrition, garden and science education for children, teens and parents.
MANHATTAN BEACH, CA — Los Angeles celebrity chefs Nyesha Arrington (Top Chef), Ray Garcia (executive chef, Broken Spanish) and Diana Stavaridis (executive chef, Manhattan House) will headline GrowingGreat’s 4th Annual Farm to Table Benefit on Sunday, April 30, 2017. This intimate event will include cooking demonstrations, wine tastings, a gourmet dinner, desserts prepared by Cupcake Wars winner, Stephanie Franz(executive pastry chef, The Strand House, Shade Hotels), live auction and dancing under the stars on the oceanfront rooftop of the new Shade Hotel in Redondo Beach. Chef David LeFevre (Fishing with Dynamite, MB Post, Arthur J) and Andrea and Michael Zislis (Shade Hotels, Strand House, Rock’N Fish, Rock & Brews) are honorary chairs of the event. Student leaders from Environmental Charter High School in Lawndale and community volunteers will be honored for their outstanding leadership and support. Gift bags will be provided by 5 Carrots, a marketing, branding, and production company specializing in healthy living and organic and plant-based products.
All proceeds go to GrowingGreat, a non-profit organization that has been improving the wellbeing of communities in Greater Los Angeles and around the country for 18 years. Their mission: to build nourishing, learning communities that empower children to make healthy food choices.
GrowingGreat programs are critical to support the health and academic success of our future generations. For most of the families impacted by GrowingGreat, their garden is the only green space in the cement-covered city where they live, and a rare source of fresh produce. Due to donor support – from events like the Farm-To-Table dinner and other sources – 60% of programs are in low-income communities.
“We help families access healthy, organic foods, no matter where they live,” says Jennifer Jovanovic, Executive Director. “Children who don’t get enough to eat or who don’t have access to healthy foods fall behind in school, in health, and in life. At GrowingGreat, we are committed to helping those children.”
GrowingGreat significantly impacts the lives of over 11,000 students and an additional 20,000 parents and siblings each year through a multitude of programs and partnerships, including:
- From Bean Seeds to Frijoles: Incorporating STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) education in the garden and hands-on nutrition and literacy activities in Spanish and English for PreK – 1st graders, their families and teachers.
- GrowingGreat Chefs: In a real-world application of the harvest in their school garden, students work side-by-side with Chef Diana Stavaridis to create dishes featured on the menu at Manhattan House restaurant.
- Nutrition and Garden Education: Interactive classroom and outdoor education programs linked to education standards for grades K-5, taught by over 200 parent volunteers throughout Los Angeles.
“It’s an honor to work with such a dynamic organization and continue to provide the tools and education that young students need to learn healthy eating habits,” says Honorary Event Chair, Chef David LeFevre. “It’s imperative to teach kids about real food and healthy eating, now and for generations to come.”
When: Sunday, April 30, 2017 from 5:00-9:30 (PDT)
Where: Shade Hotel, Redondo Beach, 655 N Harbor Drive, 90277
GrowingGreat’s mission is to build nourishing, learning communities that empower children to make healthy food choices. Their garden and nutrition education programs are multicultural with a focus on literacy and scientific inquiry. GrowingGreat programs inspire children and teens, families, civic leaders, community organizations and businesses to become leaders in promoting healthy food choices through hands-on STEM (science, technology, engineering, math), garden and nutrition education programs. Since they were founded in 1999, they have served over 250,000 children, teens and families.

Los Angeles – a city rich in culture, food, and entertainment. We invite you to join a conversation on the evolution of the culinary industry, its impact on the silver screen, and how the world’s hottest chefs have grown to share the stage with Hollywood’s biggest stars. Pulitzer Prize winning critic Jonathan Gold, will the lead the discussion.
Following, the screening of Jon Favreau’s Chef (2014).
Carl Casper is an acclaimed chef with a family life that seems as decaying as his artistic freedom. Those frustrations boil over into a raucous viral-videoed public confrontation against a restaurant critic who panned his cooking of food that his boss ordered him to make against his instincts. Now with his career ruined, Carl’s ex-wife offers an unorthodox solution in Miami: refit an old food truck to offer quality cooking on his own terms. Now with his young son, Percy, and old colleague, Martin, helping, Carl takes a working trip across America with that truck to rediscover his gastronomic passion. With Percy’s tech savvy and Martin’s enthusiasm, Carl finds that he is creating a traveling sensation on the way home. In doing so, Carl discovers he is serving up more than simply food, but also a deeper connection with his life and his family that is truly delicious in its own way.
