It was a war of the pastries and drink:eat:play challenged Los Angeles’ top bakeries and cupcake boutiques to a battle to determine who would win the best cupcake in LA. The staging area was the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel and the scene was straight out of Willy-Wonka with the exception of a wandering Nesquik mascot that took the place of “Umpa-lumpas” although meager in comparison.

Hundreds of cupcake admirers and fanatics made it out to the event on a quest to taste the trophy cupcakes that were in the running for the crown. Bakeries entered into the “Best Traditional” category as well as “Best Original.” Both categories were flooded with entries and all had quality entries. We treated our “Cupcake Challenge” official ballot like it was government issued and we diligently went from table to table examining each bite sized specimen like lost artifacts from the Pharaoh’s Egypt.

After all of the sugar that we ingested I was sure that I would have to have my stomach pumped, but lucky for me and the rest of the VivaLAfoodies crew we didn’t have to exercise that option, instead we opted for push-ups and treadmills along with a few beers. The official winners are listed below for each category.

1st Place: Big Man Bakes “Red Velvet”
2nd Place: Blue Cupcake “Sweet and Salty Vanilla”
3rd Place: Southern Girl Desserts “Red Velvet”

The event was like nothing I had ever seen before and far exceeded our expectations, but then again, all Drink:Eat:Play events keep getting better and better. These events are not for the weak heart-ed so understand “D-E-P” means business, “Go Big or Don’t go at all” So as I wrap it up, lets all put our hands up in the air and give a round of applause to Dan Silberstein for making all of these great events possible and accessible to Angelinos.

We Came, We Served, We Saw, We Drank @ The International Wine Fest

Last Saturday’s wine festival was quite a special event. Not only were international wines represented, but VivaLAfoodies had a chance to debut a taste of what is to come in 2010 with VivaLAcatering and events.

This exclusive gathering would not have been possible without the help of our friend, Dan Silberstein from Drink:Eat:Play. He curated an amazing venue at the Hollywood Renaissance Hotel and provided us with a space to display our culinary creativity.

Between plating up our “Taste of Nappa in Hollywood” chef’s “Amuse” we were able to take turns sampling the best wine vendors that K&L wine merchants, Hollywood put on display for all of the guests.

Our small bite was a hit and we made sure that the platters were never left empty. Our Savory and sweet tribute consisted of “Sourdough Garlic Toast points with Apricot Pineapple Chutney, Mascarpone Cheese and Pear Balsamic glaze topped with fresh local-organic spearmint.”

We also had a chance to meet some great people, bloggers and reminisce with our friend Carina Ost from uncouth gourmands who was covering the event for her blog. Our friend Rich Allen provided some amazing event photography and his partner in crime; Eliza James(musician) made sure that both Luis Castro and myself had a chance to sample some of the wines that were on display.

Some of our favorites included a trio of wines(Tannat, Estival & Alcyone) from Uraguay demo’d by Bossa Imports. From Gooseberry’s to pineapples and even marshmallow, chocolate and pralines these vinters know how to push the flavor envelope. Blueberry Sake from Banzai Beverage rounded out our unique day of work and wine tasting.

It was great to be among the community of food and beverage fanatics and once again be behind the scenes. Special thanks to our VivaLA girls Marissa and Allison for encouraging vendors and guests to visit us.

We enjoyed meeting everyone at the VivaLAfoodies/VivaLAcatering table and it was our pleasure to treat you to a taste of the wine country in LA. Stay tuned as we have more to come real soon…..We hope to see you all at the Cupcake Festival for a taste of something sweet.

Septemberfest | Fun times with small mugs

septemberfest 2009

septemberfest

P9190014

This past Saturday will stand out in my mind for a long time as a day to remember. Septemberfest sponsored by the folks at Drink|Eat|Play.com and under the direction of Dan Silberstein outdid itself in our eyes.

With over 100 brews on tap and unlimited pours I had a hard time keeping my souvenir tasting mug empty. From the moment we all entered we were inundated by micro-brews from the continental US as well as some international showings from our neighbors to the South and Europe.

The consensus from the crowd and the theme of the event was celebrating Americana and what a better place to host this venue than Paramount Studios in Hollywood where American film-making was pioneered and continues to thrive. Rock music was provided courtesy of Dave Matthews cover band, Stepping Feet & Tom Petty/Johnny Cash tribute band “Petty Cash.”

In between rounds, we indulged on food from the various food vendors ranging from brats and burgers to gourmet tacos from the Border Grill Taco Truck. Highlights from Border Grill included a trio of tacos loaded with flavor. Our exotic taco selection kept us satisfied from the Yucatan Pork, Carne Asada & Potato Rajas tacos. In between sips, we were able to pass around the Poblano and Carne Asada Quesadillas before going back for more beer samples.

Some of my favorite beer samplings of the day were Oskar Blues: Mama’s Little Yella Pils & Gordon Ale, Stone Brewing Companies: Arrogant Bastard and a banana clove embodied Hefeweizen by Einhorn Beer Company courtesy of Skyscraper Distributing in El Monte, CA.

After the 3 hour beer tour was over you could see the remnants that the event was a success. The kegs were dry, people were feeling good and the Paramount lot cleared out and went from being packed to a ghost-town.

Septemberfest :: America’s Answer to Oktoberfest

Mark Your Calendars for Sept 19th, 2009

Beer|Food|BBQ|Rock Music are just the beginning.  Join us and our friends at DRINK|EAT|PLAY for a day of fun at Paramount Studios in Hollywood benefiting a great cause; Animals(Noah’s Bark Animal Rescue)

August 31st, 2009, Los Angeles – Septemberfest can be best defined as America’s answer to Oktoberfest. Having felt shorted for years by German food, Polka music, and Lederhosen, America finally claimed its own tradition of BBQ, Rock music, and Daisy Dukes. The one constant? Beer.

Septemberfest will feature over 150 beers, bbq, live entertainment, and all in all, a celebration of everything that’s great about American culture. Music will be provided by “Stepping Feet”, a Dave Matthews tribute band, and “Petty Cash”, a tribute to Tom Petty and Johnny Cash. Food will be provided by the Border Grill Taco Truck as well as burger and sausage vendors, and a Best Buy lounge featuring Rock Band and broadcasts of various live college football games. Admission is $40 and includes unlimited pours, but keep in mind that the event will sell out early and tickets will not be available at the door. If you don’t purchase your tickets, you’re only letting the terrorists win. Proceeds from the event will support Noah’s Bark Animal Rescue.

To purchase tickets and for more information, please go to www.drinkeatplay.com/septemberfest. Tickets will NOT be available at the door.
