I luv the 80’s Jubilee

This past Saturday we were transported back in time to the decade of the 1980′s. Our vehicle was not a Delorian; instead it was our imagination and our memories of one of the greatest pop culture decades. The reason for this journey, quite simply was to celebrate Marissa Harrington’s golden birthday, aka the “I luv the 80’s Jubilee” or to the party animals that made it dubbed the adventure by another name; “dancing in the dark” after the great Bruce Springsteen jam by the same name.

We served up classic 80’s inspired snacks including grilled cheese bites, a gourmet version of cheese and crackers with Artichoke hearts and Triscuits included, and an array of chips and dip from store bought to homemade.

Now onto the drinks. We served up our own liquid 80’s themed concoctions and our resident mixologist herself and guest of honor has coined the creations as” the Fraggle-rock” and “the Killer Smurf.” In the spirit of the event I offered up my own creation “the Jäger Rock” also knows as the David lee Roth to party guests. This version of the Fraggle Rock will definitely leave you “dancing in the dark” To make the “Fraggle Rock” mix 2 parts Grape infused Vodka to 6 parts sweet and sour. Serve to guest while pouring in “Pop Rocks” to get the Fraggle to Rock. To make the “the Jäger rock”(aka: David Lee Roth) mix 2 parts Jägermeister to 6 parts sweet and sour. Finish off and serve with “Pop Rocks” in the same way as the original. To make the “Killer Smurf mix 2 parts blueberry vodka with 6 parts of tonic water

The cake, or shall I say the main event was truly a piece of art. We commissioned a 3D Carebear inspired cake by a local culinary student and pastry artist; Carina Mattan. This cake was even tastier than it appears and contained several layers of gourmet pastry fillings, sheet cake and frosting.

Photography for the event was provided to us by an 80’s clad Joseph Briscoe rocking both the Polaroid and sneaking in digital shots when given the chance. Food and music was provided by myself while keeping up my Brett Michaels persona. It was like I was at the controls of my very own “Rock of Love Bus.”

We wrapped up this blast from the past at Mrs. T’s Barcade in Koreatown and played vintage Nintendo games including “Rampage” and “Mike Tyson’s Punch Out” while taking in the hip hop sounds of late 1980’s-mid 1990’s.

When you get the urge to “bust a move” and take a trip back to the nostalgia of the 1980s than this is the right place. Special thanks to everyone that came out and to the ones that came in spirit. It was indeed a rad and tubular time.

Tinto Tapas España-West Hollywood

Transport yourself from West Hollywood to Spain in seconds when you enter Tinto Tapas España in West Hollywood. This restaurant and bar offers authentic Tapas selections, traditional large plate entres and amazing wine and homemade Sangria. The interior is authentic and true to the Andalusian and Moorish flavor that embodies Spanish Architecture including a stone wall that pays homage to the famous Aqueduct of Segovia. Each time I enter the establishment I am reminded of the time that I spent in Spain when I studied abroad in the Summer of 2000.

The waiters and bar tenders are decked out in traditional red San Fermin scarves that are worn in Pamplona during the festival of the running of the bulls. Go with friends and share an assortment of tapas and sample the two types of Sangria(White & Red). The white Sangria provides a more subtle taste then the traditional red Sangria however both are equally strong and full of flavor. Pitchers are also available and are a good value. They also offer $5.00 Happy Hour Specials on Monday/Wednesday(5-11pm), Tuesday(5-7pm), Thursday/Friday/Saturday(5-7pm/11-12am).

Some of my favorite tapas include the Gazpacho Andaluz, Don Quixote i Sancho Panza(Cheese & Ham Plate), Patatas Bravas(Spicy fried potatoes w/ aioli), Croquetas de Jamon(Ham Croquetes) and Setas al Ajillo(Sauteed Mushrooms).

Take a look at the website for more details on specials and a complete menu.
